Ask An Expert
Someone recently emailed me asking what they could do to generate more leads (inquiries) from their website.
Here’s what I recommended.
1. Add a Clear, Compelling Call-to-Action (CTA)
Every page should tell visitors exactly what to do next — “Get a Free Quote,” “Download the Guide,” “Book a Call.” Weak or missing CTAs are the #1 reason visitors leave without converting. Make them visually prominent and benefit-focused.
Their score: 3/10
2. Create a High-Value Lead Magnet
Offer something genuinely useful in exchange for an email address — a checklist, mini-course, template, free audit, or industry report. The more specific it is to your ideal customer’s pain point, the higher your opt-in rate.
Their score: 0/10
3. Optimize Your Landing Pages
A great landing page has one goal, one audience, and zero distractions. Remove your navigation menu, tighten your headline to focus on the outcome, and use social proof (testimonials, logos, stats) directly on the page.
Their score: 0/10
4. Install a Live Chat or Chatbot
Most visitors won’t fill out a contact form, but they will ask a quick question in chat. Tools like Intercom or Tidio can capture leads 24/7, qualify them automatically, and route hot prospects straight to your inbox.
Their score: 0/10
5. Use Exit-Intent Popups
When someone’s about to leave your site, trigger a targeted offer — a discount, free resource, or newsletter signup. Done tastefully, exit-intent popups can recover 10–15% of abandoning visitors and convert them into leads.
Their score: 0/10
6. Build SEO-Driven Blog Content
Write content that answers the specific questions your ideal customers are Googling. Rank for those terms, and you get a steady stream of warm, intent-driven traffic — people already looking for what you offer. Include a contextual CTA in every post.
Their score: 4/10
7. Add Social Proof Throughout the Site
Trust is the biggest barrier to conversion. Sprinkle testimonials, case studies, star ratings, client logos, and “as seen in” mentions across key pages — especially near your CTAs. People follow people, and credibility closes the gap between interest and action.
Their score: 4/10
Total Score: 11/100
Clearly an under-performing situation. Ouch!
The underlying principle behind all of these: your website should be doing the heavy lifting of building trust and reducing friction so that giving you their contact info feels like a no-brainer. Start with whichever of these you’re most missing — even one change can meaningfully move the needle.
